Three shows have been canceled after Austrian authorities arrested two men suspected of planning a terrorist attack, with one of the suspects reportedly targeting Taylor Swift’s upcoming stadium concerts.
Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour, which began its major European leg this summer, has become a cultural sensation and a financial powerhouse following its success in the United States last year
Taylor Swift's Eras Tour has been canceled in Austria following the arrest of two men accused of plotting a terrorist attack. One of the suspects, a 19-year-old Austrian citizen, was reported to have targeted the singer's upcoming concerts as part of his plans.
Barracuda Music, the Austrian concert promoter, announced the cancellation of the three Vienna shows via Instagram, citing safety concerns for the 200,000 anticipated attendees.
At a press conference on Wednesday, Austrian officials revealed that the arrested men had radicalized online and taken concrete steps towards carrying out an attack. A raid at the 19-year-old's home in Ternitz uncovered chemical substances, prompting a bomb squad response. The other suspect was detained in Vienna.
The Vienna State Police had planned increased security for the concerts at Ernst Happel Stadium, where Paramore was scheduled to open. Approximately 65,000 fans were expected per show, with an additional 15,000 gathering around the venue.
This incident follows a recent violent attack in England targeting Swift's fan base.
Fans had already begun gathering around the stadium for the concerts, and reactions ranged from shock to disappointment upon hearing of the cancellation.
Counterterrorism officials suspect that the plot was linked to ISIS-K, a group known for targeting high-profile events to cause mass casualties and generate global media coverage.
